TCA observed ‘Shaheed Dibosh’ (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day

The Carter Academy (TCA) paid a rich tributes to the Martyrs of the Historic Language Movement on Tuesday (21 February 2018) marking ‘Amar Ekushey’, the Language Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day. On this day in 1952, when students defying Section 144 started marching forward demanding recognition of Bangla as a state language, police opened fire and killed a number of students, including Abdus Salam, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, Abul Barkat and Abdul Jabbar in the city’s Dhaka University area. In 2000, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day.


Marking the day, a ‘Provat Feri’ (a procession with bare feet), led by TCA Principal Professor Md. Ismail Topader bought out form assembly ground that ended at the same after parading some of the thoroughfares of the village. Vice Principal, faculty members, Adjutant, administrative and management staff, students including the teachers and students of MAF Primary School joined the procession with wreaths and flowers singing ‘Amar bhaiyer roktey rangano Ekushey February’.

Then after getting back to campus, teachers and students placed wreaths and flowers at the ‘Shaheed Minar’ (Martyrs’ Monument).

Afterwards, a short discussion was held where Principal of the academy Professor Md. Ismail Topader, Vice Principal Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Coordinator Ibrahim Ali Molla, and class XI student Mira Talukder spoke commemorating the sacrifice by the martyrs for the cause of our mother tongue. One minute silence was observed by all to mark the respect for the martyrs.
